A Personal Note from Laura

In 2021, when I was pregnant with my first child, something inside me shifted. I knew it was time to get my affairs in order. I wanted, no, needed, to be the one who decided what would happen to my baby and my assets if anything ever happened to me. So I reached out to trusted attorneys for a referral and was connected with a Black Estate Planning Attorney.

I moved forward confidently… but while my estate plan was completed, it wasn’t completed the way I truly wanted. At that time, I didn’t know enough to advocate for myself or clearly articulate my wishes. And honestly? I spent way too much money for a plan that didn’t fully reflect my intentions as a mother.

Now that I understand the process, the questions, the decisions, and the emotional weight behind them, I want to prevent other mothers and families from overspending, feeling overwhelmed, or, worst of all, ending up with an incomplete plan.

That’s why I created the My Guardian Wishes Booklet.

​

I wish I had this booklet before my first meeting. I wish I had walked into the attorney’s office with all of my wishes already written out, my guardian choice, my routines for my baby, my financial intentions, my boundaries… all the things no one thinks to ask until you’re in the moment. And the truth is, many of the details included in this booklet aren’t covered in the legal documents of an estate plan at all, yet they are essential for your child’s physical, mental, and emotional care. These are the pieces that make the difference between simply naming a guardian and truly preparing someone to love, nurture, and raise your child the way you intend.

And as life has changed, my child growing, routines shifting, relationships evolving, I wish I had somewhere to update those details along the way.

Now I do.

And I created it so you can have it, too.

The next time I update my estate plan, I’ll walk in fully prepared, fully clear, and fully confident. And I want that same peace of mind for every mother, every family, and every child whose future deserves protection.
